Mahut makes the grade

This year, Nicolas Mahut is embarking on his 12th singles campaign at the Open 13 Provence tournament. His first was in 2001. Seventeen years later, Mahut is still here. This year, he opened with a win over Greece's Stefanos Tsitsipas. The final score: 7-5, 7-6(4).

Mahut, who is currently coached by Michaël Llodra, said, "I'm very happy with the way I played. And happy to see that at 36 I can still beat younger players. Especially a good player like Tsitsipas, who will undoubtedly go far."

"Good match conditions"

In Mahut's opinion, experience did not affect the outcome of today's match. Tsitsipas may need to improve his game in some areas, but Mahut also took advantage of the match conditions in Marseille. "It's very fast here and that's good for me," he said. "It means I can be more aggressive and play a serve-and-volley game. At this point, I want to be more on the offensive."

Nicolas Mahut is the last player to claim his spot in the second round. Next up, he faces Luxembourg's Gilles Muller, seeded no.6.
